From 1993 to 1995, Yingmei Duan was involved in the Chinese avant-garde movement, happening in the legendary art district called ‘Beijing East Village’. She participated in the performance “To Add One Meter to an Anonymous Mountain” (1995) which is considered an emblem of Chinese contemporary art and has had a great impact on her career as an artist.

A decisive turning point came when she began studying at The Braunschweig University of Art (HBK) in 2000, where she met Marina Abramovi?. Since then Yingmei has dedicated herself to performance art as her artistic form of expression. During her studies she also worked and apprenticed under the filmmaker and action artist Christoph Schlingensief, participating in several of his large-scale video performance installations. In 2005, Yingmei obtained her diploma in Fine Arts at HBK Braunschweig.
